The Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA), a collaboration of eight developers and the Carbon Trust has published new recommendations for fibre optic cable design to mitigate the risk of export cable failure. The design changes are the outcome of the Fibre Optic Cable Protection Assessment project managed by the Carbon Trust and funded by OWA partners EnBW, Equinor, Ørsted, RWE, ScottishPower Renewables, Shell, SSE Renewables, and Vattenfall Wind Power.

World Forum Offshore Wind (WFO) has published its Global Offshore Wind Report 2020. Globally, 5,206MW of offshore wind capacity went into operation during 2020 compared to 5,194 MW in 2019. This translates into an annual growth rate of 19,1% for the global offshore wind industry.

The Crown Estate has announced the results of its Round 4 seabed leasing for offshore wind in the UK. The Offshore Wind Lease Round 4 allocated areas for developing nearly 8GW of capacity. This is too little new capacity considering the huge ambitions the UK Government has to quadruple its offshore wind to 40 GW by 2030. Moreover the leasing round introduced a new bidding system that makes investors pay an upfront ‘option fee’ for the right to develop projects.

According to the latest WindEurope data, Europe raised €26.3bn to finance 7.1 GW of new offshore wind capacity in 2020. The UK, Netherlands, Germany and France all saw final investment decisions for major new offshore wind farms. Europe installed 2.9 GW of new offshore wind capacity in 2020. This is in line with WindEurope’s pre-COVID forecast.
