On Ross Island in Antarctica, New Zealand’s Scott Base has operated with renewable energy for several years. Three Enercon E-33 wind turbines have been running for multiple seasons in the Antarctic environment. As part of the Scott Base redevelopment, the existing 300 kW turbines will be replaced with three EWT DW54X Extreme Cold Climate 1 MW wind turbines.

Vestas has secured a 1.38 GW firm order from RWE for the Vanguard West offshore wind project, following a positive outcome in Allocation Round 7 in the United Kingdom. The project will comprise 92 V236-15.0 MW turbines installed around 47 km off the coast of Norfolk.

The first monopiles and transition pieces for the Nordlicht I offshore wind farm have been completed by EEW and CS Wind. Each monopile measures up to 80.5 metres in length and weighs up to 1,290 tonnes. The transition pieces, which connect the foundations to the tower structures, reach 23.7 metres in height and weigh around 362 tonnes.

Five companies have submitted funding applications to Enova to establish floating wind demonstration facilities over the next five years. If approved, the projects would feature between one and five floating turbines, including some of the largest turbines currently produced.

The installation of all 78 monopile foundations has been completed at Poland’s first offshore wind farm. More than 20 vessels and around 500 crew members and contractor representatives took part in the offshore construction campaign. Baltic Power, a joint venture between Orlen Group and Northland Power, is now moving into the next phase of works. Electricity generated in the Baltic Sea is expected to be supplied to the grid by the end of this year.
