Ocean Winds, a joint venture between EDP Renováveis and Engie, is marking the fifth anniversary of WindFloat Atlantic, a semi-submersible floating offshore wind farm. Located 20 kilometres off the coast of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, the 25MW project has delivered 345GWh of electricity since commissioning.
Electricity output has steadily increased, from 78GWh in 2022 to 86GWh in 2024, highlighting the technical maturity and commercial potential of floating offshore wind. To mark the anniversary, Ocean Winds has released a report reviewing the project's impact and contributions to the sector. Key outcomes include:
- Supply chain and employment: With €125 million invested and around 1,500 direct and indirect jobs created, the project has supported a skilled green workforce and enhanced the European offshore wind supply chain.
- Electricity generation: WindFloat Atlantic has consistently supplied clean electricity, maintaining strong performance through robust operations and maintenance.
- Community engagement: Local initiatives, including education programmes, have promoted knowledge-sharing and strengthened ties with the Viana do Castelo community.
- Marine ecology: Environmental monitoring has recorded more than 270 species in the project area, reflecting a positive interaction with the local marine environment.
- International relevance: The project has contributed to the global development of floating offshore wind, serving as a reference for commercial-scale projects.
