Flowind project advances floating wind operation and maintenance solutionsThe Flowind floating wind project, led by Saitec, was launched in 2024 to develop new solutions for the operation and maintenance of floating wind systems. Coordinated by the Basque Energy Cluster, the project is now approaching its final year. Saitec has developed new concrete formulations for offshore environments, including fatigue testing and the use of graphene oxide to assess performance. The company is also working on advanced monitoring systems for mooring lines, with new sensors to be installed on the DemoSATH prototype at BiMEP.

Graphenea is collaborating with Saitec on the synthesis of graphene oxide for use in cement paste. Initial tests indicate improved fatigue resistance and durability, supporting the development of more sustainable concrete materials.

Sener has focused on corrective and preventive maintenance strategies, alongside tools to support decision-making. This includes modelling the Hive Wind Soft-Stiff floating platform and developing a techno-economic tool to assess the full life cycle of floating wind turbines, from manufacturing to decommissioning.

Mugape has developed a coating system aimed at reducing ice formation on turbine blades. In collaboration with Graphenea, it is also working on anti-corrosion and anti-wear coatings for steel, incorporating graphene into epoxy and water-based formulations. Additional work includes coatings for offshore concrete structures to improve durability.

Ditrel has developed sensing and monitoring technologies for connectors, dynamic cables and bend stiffeners. Its work includes modelling cable dynamics and fatigue, as well as a rotating clamp system designed to extend cable service life. The company is also developing a methodology to predict degradation using digital twin approaches.

The project is supported by the Basque Government’s Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability through the HAZITEK 2024 programme, and by the European Regional Development Fund for the 2021–2027 period.
