SSEN Transmission has signed a long-term framework agreement with a consortium comprising Sumitomo Electric and Van Oord to support the delivery of future high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea transmission infrastructure in the north of Scotland.
The agreement establishes a strategic partnership covering the engineering, supply, transport and installation of HVDC subsea cable systems. It also includes initial design and engineering work for the proposed 525 kV Shetland 2 HVDC link.
The Shetland 2 HVDC link, which will connect Shetland with mainland Scotland, is expected to be one of the first projects delivered under the framework. The link is intended to increase transmission capacity, strengthen network resilience and support the integration of renewable electricity into the UK power system.
