Buchan Offshore Wind has received basic design certification from DNV for its selected floating foundation, a concrete Damping Pool structure designed by BW Ideol. The certification provides independent validation of the foundation design selected for the project.
The Damping Pool concept has been deployed and operated in several floating offshore wind projects internationally. Its standard platform for turbines of 15 MW and above received basic design certification from DNV in May 2025.
The design certified for Buchan builds on this technology and has been adapted to the conditions at the project site in the North Sea. Buchan Offshore Wind is planned approximately 75 km north-east of Fraserburgh, Scotland, with a generating capacity of close to 1 GW. The project is expected to provide electricity for more than one million homes.
BW Ideol has an exclusivity agreement with the Ardersier Energy Transition Facility for the manufacture of concrete floating foundations. The company is also working to establish a serial production facility at the former oil and gas fabrication yard on the Moray Firth.
