The World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) is marking 25 years since its establishment, reflecting on the growth of global wind power from 20,000 MW in 2001 to around 1,400,000 MW today. On 1 July 2001, representatives of wind energy associations from around the world met in Copenhagen, Denmark, to strengthen international cooperation and support the expansion of wind energy. At the time, global installed wind capacity stood at approximately 20,000 MW.
The meeting led to the creation of WWEA as a permanent platform for international collaboration, knowledge exchange and the promotion of wind power. One of its early initiatives was involvement in the organisation of the first World Wind Energy Conference, held in Berlin the following year.
Over the following two decades, the association grew its membership to include hundreds of organisations worldwide. Its work has focused on supporting policy development for wind energy at international level and within national frameworks, as well as contributing to the early development of the International Renewable Energy Agency.
WWEA has also promoted decentralised energy systems and community participation in renewable energy projects as part of its broader approach to sector development.
Today, WWEA highlights the expansion of global wind capacity from 20,000 MW to 1,400,000 MW, reflecting long-term growth in the sector over the past 25 years.
