Aberdeenshire Council has approved the onshore consent application for the Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm. The decision was made by the local authority’s Infrastructure Services Committee, which supported the plans to connect the project to the National Grid. Planning permission in principle has now been granted for the onshore infrastructure, which includes underground cables and a substation.
A separate offshore consent application, submitted at the end of last year, is still under consideration by the Scottish Government. Muir Mhòr is the first fully floating wind farm from the ScotWind leasing round to receive onshore consent. If offshore approval is granted, the project is expected to begin generating power in the early 2030s, with a capacity of up to 1 GW. The project is being developed as a 50/50 joint venture between Fred. Olsen Seawind and Vattenfall. The wind farm, whose name means "Great Sea" in Gaelic, will be located approximately 63 kilometres off the east coast of Scotland, near Peterhead.
