Iberdrola, through its UK subsidiary SP Energy Networks, has awarded Prysmian a contract to supply the cable for the Eastern Green Link 4 submarine electricity interconnector. The project will create a new electricity connection between Fife in Scotland and Norfolk in England.
The interconnector will have a capacity of 2,000 MW and will use high voltage direct current technology. It is scheduled to enter operation in 2033 and is intended to support the transmission of renewable electricity between Scotland and England.
The cable supply contract is valued at €2.3 billion. Prysmian will manufacture more than 640 kilometres of cable, including around 530 kilometres of submarine cable and over 116 kilometres of underground cable.
Eastern Green Link 4 is being developed by SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission. Planning applications are expected to be submitted in Scotland and England during 2026. Subject to approval by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Emissions, construction is planned to start in 2029, with commissioning targeted for 2033.
