Fugro has started nearshore surveys for the Western Isles High Voltage Direct Current link developed by SSEN Transmission. The project will enable the transfer of 1,800 MW of renewable energy from Scotland’s islands to the UK mainland. The work will deliver Geo-data to support the design and construction of cable landfalls, helping reduce risk and inform route planning.
The new link will include about 83 km of underground cable and 81 km of subsea cable, connecting the Lewis Hub High Voltage Direct Current converter station and alternating current substation on the Isle of Lewis to the mainland. Fugro is combining geophysical mapping with geotechnical boreholes to develop a detailed understanding of seabed and coastal conditions.
The Aran 250 jack-up platform is carrying out the work. Investigations include drilling and testing at potential landfall locations near Arnish Point on Lewis and Dundonnell on the Scottish mainland. Soil samples will undergo advanced analysis at Fugro’s Wallingford laboratory to convert ground data into practical engineering insights. Survey work at Arnish Point has been completed and the Aran 250 has moved to Dundonnell, where operations are expected to finish in February, subject to weather conditions.
