New crane and transport systems used for monopile handling at Windanker offshore wind farm
- Category: Product News
New lifting and transport systems, develloped by Mammoet, have been used at the port of Rønne, Denmark, to handle XXL monopiles for the Windanker offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. As offshore wind turbines increase in size, monopile foundations are becoming heavier and longer, creating logistical challenges during port handling and offshore feedering. For the Windanker project, new terminal cranes and specialised self-propelled modular transporter saddles were introduced to manage monopiles that would otherwise exceed the limits of conventional crawler crane operations at the quay.

SOWEC report questions precautionary methods in offshore wind seabird impact assessments
- Category: Industry News
Methods used to calculate the potential impacts of offshore wind farms on seabird populations may be substantially overestimating likely effects, according to a report published by the Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council. All offshore wind projects are required to carry out ornithological environmental impact assessments as part of the consenting process. These assessments examine how proposed developments could affect seabirds, including potential habitat loss, disturbance and collision risk. The results are used to determine whether projects should provide compensation, such as habitat improvements or measures to increase breeding seabird populations.
