Tata Steel Nederland explores new wind turbine tower designs

Tata Steel Nederland, in collaboration with research institutions and industry partners, is investigating ways to develop a new generation of wind turbine support structures that are robust, require less steel, and remain strong and cost-competitive. The research includes intensive collaboration with stakeholders in the wind turbine sector and aims to pilot a tubular wind turbine tower by 2027.
Poland advances offshore wind in the Baltic Sea

Poland is accelerating its offshore wind ambitions, with its first commercial-scale offshore wind development, “Baltic Power,” now underway. Two offshore substations, built by Grupa Przemysłowa Baltic (GPB) in Gdańsk and Gdynia, were recently completed and will be installed at the Baltic Power project, which is set to begin operations in 2026. The project will have a capacity of 500 MW, covering approximately 3% of Poland’s electricity demand.

Winners of offshore wind innovation call announced by EMEC

Three companies have been selected to receive funding from the West of Orkney Windfarm through EMEC’s Offshore Wind R&I Programme. The £1 million programme aims to find innovative solutions that could help make offshore wind projects more efficient and cost-effective. The programme received 29 applications, with a focus on two main areas: understanding metocean conditions at the West of Orkney Windfarm site and improving designs for operations in short weather windows.
Development of offshore wind cable burial protection database underway

ABPmer is developing a database on hard protection from offshore wind cable burial, on behalf of the Marine Management Organisation (MMO). The database will help improve cumulative effects assessments, particularly by enhancing understanding of hard protection distribution in marine protected areas (MPAs) designed to safeguard seabed features. It will also support evidence-based decision-making for offshore wind licence conditions in English Waters.
