The industry has an effective solution for this: hybrid power plants. They combine photovoltaics (PV) with wind and sometimes even a battery energy storage system (BESS). This combination offers several advantages, including higher energy yields and capacity due to complimentary generation profiles, stable generation, and efficient use of infrastructure, space and grid connection points. With BESS installed, renewable electricity can be fed into the grid according to price, consumption and grid signals. Hybrid power plants will be a hot topic at Intersolar Europe. Northern Offshore Services has launched M/V Embracer, a 36-metre catamaran crew transfer vessel for offshore wind operations and the latest in its E-Class series. The vessel is designed for hybrid and fully electric operation, allowing flexibility depending on operational requirements.
Mark Offshore has reached an agreement with Klaipėda University to operate the research vessel r/v Mintis. Under the agreement, Klaipėda University has appointed Mark Offshore as commercial and operational manager for activities in the renewables and energy sectors. Originally designed as a scientific research vessel, r/v Mintis combines research capabilities with offshore functionality, providing a platform suitable for both survey and subsea support work.
RWE has officially opened the operations and maintenance base for the Thor offshore wind farm at Thorsminde port, Denmark. The facility was designed by ATRA arkitekter and Frandsen & Søndergaard, while Østermark Entreprenørforretning carried out construction. The 2,300 square metre building spans three floors and includes a control room, warehousing and office facilities, as well as a canteen and rooftop terrace. Its materials and colours reflect the surrounding dunes and grass.
