EnBW has decided not to continue development of the Mona and Morgan offshore wind projects in the United Kingdom. The two projects, located in the Irish Sea, have been developed since 2021 with partner JERA Nex bp and have a combined potential capacity of around 3 GW.
The decision follows the outcome of the most recent Contracts for Difference allocation round run by the United Kingdom Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, in which neither project secured government support. EnBW said that, together with factors beyond its control, the lack of support means the projects no longer meet its economic criteria.
Additional challenges cited include rising supply chain costs, higher interest rates and continued implementation risks. Despite having secured development consent in a comparatively short timeframe, the partners concluded that further progress was not viable under current conditions.
EnBW will sell its 1.5 GW stake in the Mona project to JERA Nex bp. Both companies have also agreed not to proceed with the Morgan project.
As a result of withdrawing from the two projects, EnBW will record an impairment of EUR 1.2 billion in its 2025 annual report. The write-down is excluded from adjusted EBITDA and has no cash impact.
