Unspooling operations onto the cable laying vessel at the Port of Heraklion Greecedeugro Milan has transported 58 kilometres of Prysmian HVAC subsea cable, weighing 3,550 metric tons, from Prysmian’s factory in Finland to the transshipment port in Heraklion, Crete, as part of the Cyclades IV Interconnector Project.

The project connects the Southern and Western Cyclades to the mainland grid. deugro coordinated the complete transport process, including collection at the Pikkala factory, ocean transport, and delivery in Crete.

The company provided a 23-metre-diameter carousel spread, engineering support, cable spooling, personnel, and related services to support operations. The heavy-lift deck carrier Vestvind was chartered to transport the cables.

Preparations in Rotterdam and Milan included technical modifications to support safe spooling and transport, such as the installation of the carousel, a loading tower, deck tensioner, and auxiliary deck equipment. The system was designed for direct spooling of the 58 kilometres of cable, with installations carried out in Rotterdam and Vlissingen in collaboration with local partners.

At the Pikkala factory port, the cables were spooled under the supervision of Prysmian, deugro, dteq Transport Engineering Solutions, and the subcontracted spooling team. The vessel remained anchored about 400 metres offshore, with careful monitoring of the mooring system to ensure safety.

After nearly ten days, the cables were loaded onto the deck carrier, which then sailed to Heraklion. The cables were unspooled to the installation vessel within seven days, maintaining the project schedule. The Vestvind subsequently returned to Rotterdam for demobilisation and handover.
