Wind Energy Ireland has issued a warning that Ireland’s offshore wind targets face significant risk without immediate and decisive government intervention. The alert accompanies the publication of a new Offshore Wind Action Plan developed by Wind Energy Ireland. The plan outlines key government priorities necessary to realise Ireland’s offshore wind potential and restore confidence in the country’s ability to develop a competitive, sustainable and resilient offshore wind industry.
While the plan acknowledges recent government progress, it stresses the need for swift delivery of policy commitments, supported by appropriate funding and resources to match the seriousness of the government’s commitment to the sector.
The Action Plan presents 24 targeted actions across four main areas to support current projects and establish a long-term framework offering certainty for future offshore wind development. These areas are:
1. Delivering the first phase of projects to establish Ireland’s offshore wind industry.
2. Maximising the South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan, including advancing the Tonn Nua site auction and the development of Lí Ban, Manannán and Danu sites.
3. Accelerating the National Offshore Renewable Energy Designated Maritime Area Plan to secure a long-term project pipeline for both fixed and floating wind.
4. Developing essential infrastructure and demand strategies, such as investments in ports, grid capacity and industrial demand to support offshore wind growth.
