National Grid and TenneT Germany will partner to develop GriffinLink, a multi-purpose interconnector that could link British and German offshore wind to both electricity systems. The project will explore the potential to simultaneously connect up to 2 GW of offshore wind between the UK and Germany.
Over the coming years, onshore and offshore studies will assess existing developments and proposals within an integrated European grid. Further research will examine the business case and the socio-economic costs and benefits of the project. A final investment decision will be required before construction proceeds.
The integrated approach aims to improve cross-border grid efficiency, optimise renewable energy use, lower costs and reduce demand for materials, while minimising impacts on coastal communities and the environment. GriffinLink is expected to be operational by the late 2030s.
