Iberdrola Australia has been chosen as a partner to develop the VNI West (Victoria to New South Wales Interconnector West) transmission project. The new infrastructure will connect Victoria and New South Wales through a 240 km, 500 kV double-circuit transmission line, designed to boost bidirectional transfer capacity by up to 3.5 GW and enable greater integration of renewable generation across both states.
In the first phase, Iberdrola will collaborate with VicGrid, Victoria’s new transmission network planning body, to define key project elements including engineering design, financial and technical planning, and cost estimation. The company will also help build engagement with local communities and stakeholders, and assist with environmental, cultural heritage, and regulatory approvals. Following completion of this stage, Iberdrola will submit a proposal for the design, construction, ownership, and operation of the project. Construction is expected to be completed by 2030.
