Acciona has been selected as the development partner for the Gippsland offshore wind transmission project in Victoria, Australia. Under a concession agreement, the company will be responsible for its development, financing, construction and operation for 30 years. The project has a planned capacity of 2GW.
VicGrid, the Victorian state government agency responsible for planning and developing the electricity transmission network and renewable energy zones, is overseeing the project. It will be the first major transmission network in the state designed to connect future offshore wind generation, initially providing capacity for up to 2GW of offshore wind power.
The project will include a 500kV high-voltage overhead transmission line spanning approximately 60 kilometres to carry electricity generated offshore to the mainland.
The contract also covers the construction of a new 500kV terminal station at Giffard. This will receive electricity from offshore wind farms and connect it to the Loy Yang energy complex.
