Work has started on the Sanquhar II Community Wind Farm in the south of Scotland. Once completed, it will be capable of generating electricity for about 335,000 homes. The project had been paused in 2023 due to tax measures introduced by the previous UK Government but has now been cleared to proceed.
Developer CWP Energy said the project can move to financial close following the UK Labour Government’s recent decision to drop plans for zonal electricity pricing. According to the company, such a policy would have discouraged investment in wind farms and other renewable energy projects in Scotland.
The 44-turbine project, located in Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire, received planning consent from the Scottish Government in August 2023 after nearly a decade of development. Vestas will supply V162 turbines and will be supported by Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK during construction.
