Buchan Offshore Wind has submitted offshore consent applications to Scottish Ministers for a proposed floating wind farm located 75 kilometres northeast of Fraserburgh on the Aberdeenshire coast. The project, awarded seabed rights through the ScotWind leasing round in 2022, is planned with a capacity of nearly 1 GW and up to 70 turbines, with a targeted grid connection in 2033.
BW Ideol’s patented Damping Pool substructure has been identified as the preferred floating foundation. BW Ideol is working to establish a manufacturing centre at the Ardersier Energy Transition Facility, on the site of a former oil and gas fabrication yard on the Moray Firth.
The submission covers applications under the Electricity Act 1989 and the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010, supported by survey data collected and analysed over three and a half years. Later in 2025, Buchan Offshore Wind plans to submit an onshore planning application to Aberdeenshire Council for the cable route and connection at Peterhead substation.
Natural Power provided support in preparing the offshore consent applications.
