Boskalis' Boka Falcon has completed the first phase of the Baltica 2 project in Poland. In recent months the vessel was fitted with the large T-rex plough to remove boulders from the seabed and clear the planned routes for the offshore wind farm’s export and inter-array cables. This phase involved the removal of several hundred boulders along the cable corridors.
Before cable installation can begin, Boka Falcon will return to the route with a different tool attached to the yellow A-frame on the aft deck: the Megalodon. While the T-rex was pulled across the seabed to clear obstacles, the Megalodon is designed for trenching. Its white blade, fitted with two green iron teeth, can excavate to a depth of two metres to loosen the seabed and create a trench for cable installation and burial.
This work is scheduled for next year, alongside dredging activities that Boskalis will undertake in the offshore wind farm area. A trailing suction hopper dredger and a backhoe dredger will be used to remove sand dunes and prepare the pits where installation vessels will position themselves during the Baltica 2 construction programme.
