The Hungarian wind energy market reached a new stage in August 2026. Alongside a comprehensive legislative reform published in the Hungarian Official Gazette, the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (HEPURA) announced on 30 August a competitive wind capacity tender.
Together, the reform and tender establish a new regulatory framework for wind energy development in Hungary. The reform is intended to accelerate project development and provide greater predictability for investors, while the tender will award at least 700 MW of new wind capacity. It is the first step in a programme targeting 4,000 MW of new wind capacity by the end of 2030.
The number of designated facilitation zones suitable for wind energy development will increase from eight to 25 districts. An integrated, one-stop environmental and power plant construction permitting procedure will also be introduced, with shorter permitting deadlines in designated facilitation zones.
Only dedicated project companies will be eligible to participate in the tender. These companies will be required to offer renewable energy communities the opportunity to acquire an ownership interest of up to 25%.
The evaluation process will place particular emphasis on contributions to local communities, energy storage solutions and the use of equipment manufactured in the European Union.
Applications can be submitted between 4 September and 30 October 2026.
