The Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (HEPURA) has launched a tender for available capacity on the country's medium- and high-voltage electricity networks. The procedure is specifically aimed at allocating grid connection rights for wind power projects, with the first applications to be submitted from 1 September 2026. The tender is intended to support renewable energy development while maintaining security of supply and providing a transparent allocation of available network capacity.
Wind power is the primary eligible technology and can be proposed at all available network connection points. Battery energy storage systems can be included as a secondary technology, but no third technology is permitted.
Applicants must request at least 15 MVA of export capacity and propose a wind power plant with a minimum installed capacity of 15 MW.
Applications can be submitted by business entities under Hungarian law. The procedure will be conducted in Hungarian, with foreign-language documents requiring a certified Hungarian translation. Applicants or corporate groups may submit only one application per connection point, while the total capacity awarded to a corporate group across different connection points may not exceed 100 MVA.
Applications must include details of the applicant, the proposed project site, the connection point and key technical parameters, including export capacity, network voltage, generation technology and the earliest possible connection date. The proposed project site must include at least 1 hectare of land and be located within 22 kilometres, measured in a straight line, of the requested connection point.
Applicants must also provide declarations covering issues including acceptance of a partial award, financial security, beneficial ownership and exclusion grounds. They may also voluntarily offer a call option for up to 30% of the equity in the project company to the state or a municipality, which is one of the evaluation criteria.
Applications can be submitted electronically from 1 September 2026 until 18 September 2026. An online information session is scheduled for 3 September, with registration required at least one business day in advance. HEPURA is expected to announce the results by 2 December 2026.
Successful applicants must complete and commission their projects within 24 months of the approved connection date. Grid connection rights will be forfeited if deadlines are not met, including the requirement to submit a grid connection application within 15 days.
