Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Danish pension fund PensionDanmark have launched Plexar Energy, a company that will develop, install and operate microgrids powered by renewable energy sources. Plexar Energy aims to standardise and deliver end-to-end, on-site microgrid solutions that integrate with the local electricity grid. The company will focus on developing commercial-scale microgrid systems that enhance energy independence, mitigate electricity price volatility, and provide additional grid capacity to support electrification.
Initial development efforts will target sectors such as port operations—where microgrids can supply shore power to reduce fuel use by docked vessels—and warehousing, where microgrids can support electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Further areas of focus include heavy transport, data centres, district heating, mining, and oil and gas operations.
Financing support is provided through the CI Microgrid Electrification Fund, a pilot fund fully subscribed at EUR 112.5 million, with PensionDanmark as the sole external investor. The fund enables industrial users to implement microgrids without upfront capital investment.
