A wooden shipwreck believed to be around 300 years old has been discovered on the beach at Norderney during offshore cable installation work for the DolWin4 offshore grid connection project. The site is currently being investigated by an archaeological team from the Ostfriesische Landschaft, after which the ship's remains will be recovered.
Initial assessments indicate that the wreck is an almost entirely wooden Dutch vessel dating from the 17th or 18th century. Based on the visible remains, archaeologists estimate that the ship was approximately 15 metres long and five metres wide. The archaeological team has collected samples from the site, which will now be analysed to determine the vessel's age more accurately. To protect the discovery and allow a detailed archaeological investigation, Amprion suspended construction work in the immediate area immediately after the wreck was found. In coordination with the relevant authorities and the archaeological team, the company is implementing a recovery and documentation plan. The recovered sections of the wreck are expected to be transported to a storage facility later this week, where they will undergo detailed archaeological documentation in cooperation with the Niedersächsisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege at its Oldenburg office.
The discovery is not expected to affect progress on the offshore cable installation.
