Tecnalia has begun collaborating with Surion Wind Systems, a start-up based in Alava, Spain that specialises in solutions for the renovation and partial repowering of wind farms. The partnership aims to support the modernisation of ageing turbine fleets in Europe and the United States by improving efficiency and extending operational life.
As part of the collaboration, Tecnalia is providing expertise in the design of power control systems, access to specialised software and intellectual property, and support in the development of advanced analysis tools for loads, generator losses and dynamic system behaviour. A scale test bench will be established to validate the performance of Surion’s power control system.
Surion Wind Systems offers a partial repowering solution that replaces key components while reusing up to 48% of existing infrastructure. The modular design and multiple drive train configuration allow the installation of turbines rated between 1.5 MW and 3 MW with lower investment and maintenance costs, while reducing repowering expenses by up to 44%. The approach also encourages local manufacturing and supports regional supplier networks.
The collaboration is part of Tecnalia’s deeptech4Impact initiative, which provides technological support to start-ups. Surion Wind Systems joins a portfolio of 16 deeptech companies managed by Tecnalia Ventures. In 2024, the portfolio increased in value by 187%, its companies grew turnover by 83% and attracted €74 million in capital.
