Indias Akvotransiro trials vessel made from discarded wind turbine bladesAkvotransiro Tech, a startup based in Guwahati, India, has trialled a patent-pending catamaran built entirely from end-of-life (EOL) wind turbine blades. The initiative addresses the growing challenge of blade waste, with more than 43 million metric tons expected globally by 2050 and India projected to generate 25,000–30,000 tons annually by 2030.

The company’s Wind2Water technology re-engineers discarded blades into modular hulls, pontoons and docks, offering a circular economy solution that reduces disposal costs while creating affordable, low-maintenance vessels. The four-person catamaran was successfully tested on Deepor Beel near Guwahati, demonstrating stability and durability.

Founded in 2020 and supported by the Technology Innovation Hub at IIT Guwahati, Akvotransiro previously developed bamboo-composite boats for rescue, fishing and passenger transport. Wind2Water extends this work, providing scalable applications such as multipurpose catamarans, pontoon boats, trimarans and floating docks.

The company is now seeking partners across the wind energy value chain to scale the technology and build larger vessels for inland and coastal transport.
