BMW Group and E.ON have introduced Germany’s first commercial Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) service for private customers. The system enables bidirectional charging, allowing the BMW iX3 not only to draw power but also to feed electricity back into the grid.
Energy management is handled through the BMW Wallbox Professional in combination with E.ON’s dedicated V2G tariff. Software for the service has been developed jointly by BMW and E.ON. Customers who make their vehicle battery available for controlled charging and discharging can receive a bonus of up to €720 per year, equivalent to around 14,000 kilometres of driving without charging costs.
The BMW iX3 will be the first model to offer the technology, with other vehicles to follow. The system is designed to maintain battery health, give users flexibility in charging preferences, and support the grid during times of high demand or surplus supply. In the longer term, the solution will be integrated into a broader energy platform linking charging infrastructure, photovoltaic systems, heat pumps, and smart home applications.
