Nexans and TenneT have marked the start of subsea cable production for the LanWin2 offshore grid connection project at Nexans’ facility in Halden, Norway. The project will connect offshore wind farms in the German North Sea to the country’s transmission grid.

It will use 525 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. Production follows the successful qualification of Nexans’ 525 kV HVDC XLPE cable technology.

LanWin2 is expected to be commissioned in 2031. The technology will also be used for other projects under the framework agreement between Nexans and TenneT, established in 2023. These include BalWin3, where cable installation in the Wadden Sea and nearshore areas is planned for 2027.
