The European Commission has approved three new cross-border renewable energy projects under the fifth call for Cross-Border Renewable Energy (CB RES) status: Wind, Deploy and Zega-Linnk. Wind: This project between Ukraine and Romania plans to deploy 650 MW of onshore wind capacity near Poltavska, Ukraine. It is expected to generate around 2 TWh of electricity annually.
Deploy: The project between Poland and Germany plans to develop an integrated energy plant in Guben, Poland, combining wind and photovoltaic installations with a total capacity of 180 MW. The electricity will be converted into heat for industrial users in Gubin, Germany, and will also contribute to district heating in Guben.
Zega-Linnk: This project builds on the cross-border district heating network serving Braunau, Austria, and Simbach, Germany, which has operated since 2001–2003. A geothermal borehole in Simbach currently provides base-load heat, with natural gas boilers covering peak demand. The project plans to install a 5 MW heat pump in Simbach and develop a 12–15 MW geothermal borehole in Braunau. The cross-border network will allow surplus geothermal heat from Germany to be supplied to Austria, while renewable heat produced in both countries will provide additional supply capacity.
