Onshore wind energy in Germany was extended by a net capacity of 1,892MW in the first half of 2016, representing a growth of 73 per cent over the same period the previous year (1,093MW). Factoring in the number of dismantled turbines and the 161MW of repowered turbine capacity in the first six months, this gives a gross capacity increase of 2,053MW.

US wind industry activity approached record levels in the second quarter as utilities and other purchasers locked in record low wind costs. Over 18,200MW of wind power capacity are now under construction or in advanced stages of development, according to the American Wind Energy Association’s (AWEA) U.S. Wind Industry Second Quarter 2016 Market Report.

DNV GL has launched a new joint industry project (JIP) together with fourteen global partners to mutually develop a Recommended Practice for the coupled analysis of floating offshore wind turbines. Guidance includes setting up minimum requirements for the design on new concepts that can help investors’ evaluation, and supporting the more mature technologies towards a safe and secure commercialisation.

The Carbon Trust has revealed details of a new European phase of its collaborative research, development and demonstration (RD&D) programme; the Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA). The programme is designed to impact the levelised cost of energy (LCoE) from offshore wind by reducing costs, improving efficiency and availability of existing and future offshore wind farms.

Germany's parliament approved a plan to reform the country's renewable energy law by ending feed-in tariffs in favour of competitive auctions and putting clear volumes on wind energy deployment. Lawmakers have agreed to cap the annual auctions for onshore wind at 2.8GW and offer fluctuating tenders for offshore wind in order to control renewables installations over the next decade.
