Just 476 MW worth of wind farm projects won capacity in the latest German onshore wind auction. A total of 700 MW was on offer. The average price of bids was €61/MWh. This was slightly lower than the previous auction in October 2018 (€63/MWh) but higher than May 2018’s €57/MWh.

Developers commissioned a little over 45GW of onshore wind turbines globally in 2018 compared with 47GW a year earlier. Just four manufacturers accounted for more than half, or 57%, of the machines deployed: Denmark’s Vestas, China’s Goldwind, GE Renewable Energy of the USA and Spain’s Siemens Gamesa.

The Global Wind Energy Innovation Trends report released by IntelStor reveals that over the past 40 years of the wind industry’s development, wind turbine manufacturing companies have spent US$ 33.4 billion on product development. That investment has led to the deployment of more than 390,000 wind turbines globally. But the industry also carries a dark secret. That staggering amount of investment has yielded a very poor return on capital (ROC) for most of the companies who have developed and sold wind turbines in the past 40 years.
