Fourteen energy companies and organisations from Northern and Central Europe have established the Baltic Energy Initiative to cooperate on projects aimed at strengthening energy security and competitiveness across the region. The initiative covers offshore wind, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and bioLNG, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCS), nuclear power and small modular reactors (SMRs).
The agreement was signed by organisations from Poland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Norway. The signatories include Orlen, Eesti Energia, Enefit, Fortum, KN Energies, DNV Energy Systems, Topsoe, Siemens Energy, Adven, Steady Energy, P2X Solutions, Latvenergo, Gasgrid Finland and Orsted.
The initiative will provide a platform for sharing expertise and experience and developing projects with an international reach. Priorities include offshore wind, closer integration of LNG and bioLNG markets, a regional hydrogen market, carbon transport and storage, and small modular reactors. The partners will also seek funding through European Union programmes and other international sources.
Energy infrastructure protection will also be a focus. The partners will share experience in critical infrastructure protection, cyber security, emergency preparedness, and responses to physical and hybrid threats. They will assess projects aimed at improving infrastructure resilience and explore potential financing sources.
The initiative will also provide a forum for developing common positions and recommendations on regulation, investment and support mechanisms for strategic energy projects. The partners aim to use this common platform to represent the region's interests in discussions with European institutions.
