On 14 May 2025, Sif opened its expanded factory at Maasvlakte 2 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The existing 40,000 m² facility has been enlarged by an additional 60,000 m² and upgraded from a traditional assembly plant to a fully integrated, robotised production line for monopile foundations with diameters of up to 11 metres and lengths of up to 120 metres.
The expanded site has a theoretical production capacity of approximately 200 monopiles per year. The €328 million expansion was completed over a 16-month construction period and has created nearly 200 additional jobs.
The first projects to be carried out at the upgraded factory are the Empire Wind 1 and Ecowende offshore wind farms in the USA and the Netherlands, respectively. Of the 54 foundations required for Empire Wind 1, more than 30 monopiles and all primary steel for the transition pieces have already been completed. Production of the 52 transition piece-less monopile foundations for Ecowende is scheduled to begin shortly.
Future projects include monopiles and transition pieces for Baltyk 2 and 3 in Poland, and monopiles for Oranjewind in the Netherlands.
