RWE and the town of Bedburg have commissioned the 60 MW Bedburg 3 wind farm, further advancing the transformation of the Rhenish mining region into a modern energy hub. Located at the Garzweiler open-pit mine, the wind farm comprises nine turbines that can generate enough electricity to meet the equivalent of 36,500 households.
Seven turbines have an installed capacity of 7 MW each, while the remaining two have a capacity of 5.7 MW each. Like the Königshovener Höhe (67 MW) and Bedburg A44n (29 MW) projects, Bedburg 3 is a joint venture between RWE (51%) and the town of Bedburg (49%). Together, the partners operate wind farms within the Bedburg municipal area with a total installed capacity of approximately 156 MW.
RWE also pays 0.2 cents for every kWh generated to the surrounding municipalities. Bedburg, as the host municipality, can receive up to €250,000 annually. Local associations in Bedburg are also eligible to receive a share of the proceeds under North Rhine-Westphalia's Citizens' Energy Act (Bürgerenergiegesetz). The town of Bedburg manages the application process.
