GT Wings has obtained verification from Lloyd's Register for the sea trials performance assessment methodology of its AirWing Jet Sail technology, a wind propulsion system for vessels. The verification follows around ten months of commercial operation of a 20-metre AirWing installed on the MV Vectis Progress, a general cargo vessel operated by Carisbrooke Shipping. The system was installed in March 2025.
Since installation, the AirWing has operated on commercial routes across the Atlantic, including North Atlantic winter conditions, as well as voyages through the Great Lakes and in the Caribbean. GT Wings has been collecting operational and environmental data to assess fuel consumption and emissions performance under real operating conditions.
Lloyd’s Register confirmed that the company’s performance assessment methodology aligns with recognised industry standards, including ISO 19030 and International Towing Tank Conference performance analysis practices. The review found that the approach used to isolate and quantify the contribution of wind-assisted propulsion is suitable for in-service performance evaluation.
GT Wings stated that it will continue monitoring and analysing operational data from the Vectis Progress as part of its validation programme.
