According to GWEC the wind power industry set new records across the world last year, and wind is leading the transformation of the global power system. Wind power led all technologies in new power generation in 2015", said GWEC Secretary General Steve Sawyer.

American wind power supported a record 88,000 jobs at the start of 2016—an increase of 20 per cent in a year—according to the U.S. Wind Industry Annual Market Report, Year Ending 2015, released by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). The job growth in 2015 is primarily attributable to more wind project development and construction, requiring more than 38,000 employees.

Renewable generation capacity increased by 152GW or 8.3% during 2015, the highest annual growth rate on record, according to new data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Renewable Capacity Statistics 2016 finds that as of the end of 2015, 1,985GW of renewable generation capacity existed globally. 2015 was a record year for both wind and solar due in large part to a continued decline in technology costs.

Major brands and other emerging non-utility customers signed 52 per cent, or 2,074MW, of the wind power capacity contracted through power purchase agreements (PPA) in 2015 in the USA. Customers driving this new demand for wind energy include Fortune 500 companies behind household brands, like Tide and Downy, high-tech companies, universities, and major U.S. cities.
