Van Oord has placed an order for two new Subsea Rock Installation (SRI) vessels to support offshore energy infrastructure protection. The first vessel is expected to enter service in 2028, with a second to follow within a year.
Each vessel will have a loading capacity of 35,000 tonnes, be capable of handling large rock sizes, and feature a DP-2 dynamic positioning system. The design includes multi-fuel engines compatible with biofuel and methanol, a direct current grid with large battery storage, and an energy-efficient hull and rock handling system.
Van Oord already operates three SRI vessels—Stornes, Nordnes and Bravenes. The newbuilds will be based on the same platform. Construction will be carried out by Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore in China.
