Wind and wakes over Penmanshield wind farm (UK) – from Tipspeed’s digital twin analysisGreensolver has partnered with Tipspeed to integrate independent wind and performance analysis into its wind asset management and advisory services. The collaboration builds on more than 2 GW of wind farms assessed by Tipspeed across around 30 sites.

According to the analyses, roughly half of the sites showed performance gaps not primarily linked to turbine underperformance. In these cases, other factors such as lower-than-expected wind resource, higher wake losses, or the influence of neighbouring wind farms were identified.

Wind farm operators often face challenges in determining the causes of lower-than-expected production. Standard nacelle-mounted anemometers can be affected by rotor and nacelle interference, while lidar systems, although accurate, are typically limited to individual turbines and may be time-consuming to deploy across entire sites.

Tipspeed applies a physics-based digital twin approach using existing datasets, including pre-construction measurements and satellite imagery, to model wind conditions, wake effects and expected production across a wind farm. The method enables assessment of full sites without additional hardware and can reconstruct historical performance over extended periods.

Where correctable issues were identified, these included curtailment settings influenced by biased temperature or wind measurements, controller configurations and yaw misalignment. Reported corrective actions have resulted in a combined recovery of 31 GWh in annual energy production, with further measures ongoing.

The partnership also focuses on implementation, supporting follow-up actions such as technical investigations, adjustments and verification of performance improvements.
