Ayre Offshore Wind Farm has gained planning consent for its onshore infrastructure after the Highland Council granted permission for the associated works. The decision enables the 1 GW project to continue progressing towards construction.
Located east of Orkney and north-east of Caithness, Ayre is being developed by renewable energy company Qair. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 1.2 million homes. Consultation on the offshore application for Ayre Offshore Wind Farm, submitted to the Marine Directorate, has recently concluded. Subject to approval, the project is expected to become operational in the early 2030s.
