The Hagedorn Group has completed the dismantling of the former coal-fired power plant in Ibbenbüren and handed over the 27-hectare site to Amprion. The transmission system operator will now prepare the site for the construction of the BalWin2 converter station, which will connect offshore wind farms directly to the electricity grid in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Hagedorn acquired the site in 2023 after the coal-fired power plant was decommissioned in 2021. Under the agreement, the site was to be transferred to Amprion by mid-2026. Following an extensive site selection process, Amprion chose the brownfield site to reduce the impact on the surrounding landscape and environment. The existing transmission line from the former power plant will be reused to connect the converter station to the Westerkappeln substation.
