The European Patent Office (EPO) Boards of Appeal has upheld the Tilted Wind Tower (TWT) patent owned by Freia Offshore, an associated company of Hexicon, following an appeal by EnerOcean. The patent is maintained as granted.
The Boards of Appeal decision was issued after oral proceedings on 23 June 2026 in case T1143/24. The ruling is final in practice and cannot be further appealed.
EnerOcean had challenged an earlier decision by the EPO Opposition Division, which had already upheld the patent in favour of Freia Offshore.
With the appeal dismissed, the TWT patent remains in force across the European jurisdictions where it has been validated. The patent covers the core technology behind TwinWind, a dual-turbine floating offshore wind platform developed by Hexicon and commercialised through Freia Offshore.
EnerOcean has contested the patent since 2021.
