Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) has developed a new wind generation facility to support testing of large-scale floating wind turbines. The facility is intended to reflect the increasing size and complexity of floating wind systems and the need for more representative test conditions.
The new setup provides a controlled and uniform wind field that can be combined with waves, currents and variable water depth in a single test environment. This allows floating wind concepts to be assessed under combined environmental loads rather than in isolation.
By integrating wind, wave and current simulation, the facility enables developers and designers to validate floating wind turbine behaviour, system responses and design assumptions at larger scale and with improved accuracy compared with previous testing approaches.
