Will 2021 be the year of a green economic recovery?Most of the world is still in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis, coping with the second wave and/or heading into a third wave. Although vaccination programmes have started, 2021 will still be a year of fighting the current pandemic. But 2020 was not all bad news.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has slowed work on some renewable energy projects but, according to the International Energy Agency, activity is resuming and the world is expected to see record renewable energy capacity additions in 2020 and 2021, and to have 198GW of renewable energy capacity by the end of 2020.- Category: Publishers Note
Are the big oil giants sincere or greenwashing?According to Eurelectric’s Power Barometer the carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector are decreasing faster than anticipated. Renewables dominate the generation mix, while our reliance on polluting fossil-based generation continues to drop. Eurelectric’s Power Barometer, a set of key industry indicators, reflects a historic development in the power sector and points to the challenges ahead of achieving a climate neutral European economy by 2050.

European Commission makes fighting climate change central to Europe’s economic recoveryOn 21 July, European Union (EU) leaders agreed a deal for a post-coronavirus recovery package and a new EU budget for 2021–2027 (€ 1.1 trillion) following a four-day summit. The recovery package remains consistent with proposals raised in May, which suggested a € 750 billion spending package for green and digital transitions. The recovery package is a combination of grants and loans.

Will the wind energy industry for once not be hard hit by a global crisis?
The world is still experiencing a health and economic crisis due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, since many countries have succeeded in controlling the virus (for now), lots of measures have been eased and some have been lifted. The economic effect that the lockdowns have had on (local) economies is devastating. It is expected that in the first half of 2020 the European economy will decrease by 10%, and although a recovery is expected in the second half of 2020, a decrease of 5% is expected for the year. In the short term the wind industry is also affected by, for example, supply chain issues, closure of manufacturing facilities, and delays in project execution. However, in the long term the wind industry (and other renewables) might dodge the bullet this time.

COVID-19 and its impact on the wind energy industry
At the moment, the world is experiencing a health and economic crisis due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). With many countries implementing measures such as travel bans and partial lockdowns to contain COVID-19 it is likely that our industry will be affected as well. The question is to what extent. I guess nobody knows the answer right now but the situation might affect supply chains and cause a shortage of personnel, lack of finance and a global downturn of the economy in general.- Category: Publishers Note
