Floris Siteur Publisher Windtech International 2019EU votes yes to long-term binding target for renewables
In November the European Parliament gave its final approval for a binding European Union (EU)-wide renewable energy target of 32% for 2030. The Parliament cast its final vote on adoption of the Renewable Energy Directive and the Governance Regulation, two key parts of Europe’s Clean Energy Package that sets the EU legal framework for renewables up to 2030. Ministers from the 28 member states will soon finalise their approval, and the Directive and Regulation will become law.

Hamburg: the centre of the global wind energy industry
In the last week of September 2018, Hamburg was for the third time the centre of the global wind energy industry. The WindEnergy conference and exhibition again demonstrated its international character: more than 35,000 visitors from 100 countries were there, getting information on the latest products and services from 1,482 exhibitors from 40 nations. 45% of the visitors were from outside Germany. The share of international exhibitors grew to more than 50% compared with 44% in 2016. The entire value chain was present in the exhibition halls, including 16 wind turbine manufacturers from Europe, the Americas and Asia.

The Global Wind Summit, the biggest event of the year for business and networking
 
The Global Wind Summit, to be held in September in Hamburg this year, will be the biggest and most important meeting of the wind industry worldwide. It combines the wind industry exhibition WindEnergy Hamburg with the global conference WindEurope to create a platform for business, networking and information for the onshore and offshore wind industry. These two events will be held side by side from 25 to 28 September 2018 at the Hamburg Messe site. At the WindEurope 2018 Conference, more than 500 speakers and presenters will inform the attendees about every aspect of the wind industry in 2018. At WindEnergy Hamburg, covering nine exhibition halls, more than 1,400 exhibitors from 35 countries will present their product innovations and customised solutions for the wind industry, and the expected number of visitors is more than 30,000. This year, the exhibition focuses on three major subjects: dynamic markets, cost-efficiency and smart energy.

Europe sets target of 32% by 2030 and corporate renewable energy leads the way
 
European countries gave their endorsement to a binding EU-wide renewable energy target of 32% for 2030. They confirmed a deal on the Renewable Energy Directive, which negotiators from the European Council and European Parliament reached on 14 June 2018. According to the deal, 32% of Europe’s final energy consumption will need to come from renewables by 2030. European countries also agreed on some concrete measures that will underpin the delivery of the target.

Demand drives US wind power development to new heights
 
The American Wind Energy Association’s (AWEA’s) Windpower 2018 conference and exhibition was organised for the third time in Chicago from 7 to 10 May. Over 7,600 wind industry professionals attended and over 450 exhibiting companies and organisations showed their products and services on the exhibition floor. After several ‘slower’ years it seems that the show is on its way up again. More people attended the annual show and most of the exhibitors we spoke to were more positive than in the last couple of years.

Wind industry breaks records in Europe and offshore wind industry eyes Taiwan

Europe added a record 15.7GW of new wind energy capacity in 2017, according to WindEurope’s annual onshore and offshore wind statistics. New wind farm installations were up 20% on 2016. Onshore wind capacity grew by 12.5GW and offshore wind by 3.1GW.

Wind power capacity worldwide reaches 539GW

The overall capacity of wind turbines installed worldwide by the end of 2017 reached 539,291MW, according to preliminary statistics published by the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA). 52,552MW were added in 2017, slightly more than in 2016 when 51,402MW went online. This is the third largest capacity ever installed within one year, and follows the record years 2015 and 2014. However, the annual growth rate of 10.8% is the lowest since the industrial deployment of wind turbines started at the end of the 20th century.
