Is the US wind industry ready for the end of the PTC era?
For many years the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has organised the Windpower conference and exhibition. This year the event was organised in Houston, Texas. During the global credit crunch, and the years after, the show faced a couple of rough years with a decreasing number of exhibitors and (especially) visitors. According to AWEA, this year’s show grew by 10% making it the largest show in five years. And indeed the show felt more lively and busy. Although it still is not back at the level it was at before the financial crisis hit the wind industry.

300GW of new capacity to be added in the next five years
Every other year WindEurope organises a combined conference and exhibition in a European city. WindEurope 2019 was organised in Bilbao, Spain, from 2 to 4 April. The event attracted 8,500 participants and on the exhibition floor 300 companies showed their products and services. The conference was divided into 30 sessions in which 400 presenters held their talks. Participants of the event came from 80 different countries but almost half came from Spain. That so many people were from Spain is not a surprise because the Bilbao region is the home of some of the global players in the industry like Iberdrola, Siemens Gamesa and Ingeteam. The team from Windtech International attended all days of the event and found lots of interesting topics for future articles, so whether or not you were able to attend the event itself we will update you in future issues about the new technical developments.

Wind power capacity worldwide reaches 600GW in 2018
The annual on- and offshore WindEurope Conference & Exhibition will take place in Bilbao, Spain, from 2 to 4 April 2019. Prospects for wind in Spain are looking bright again compared with the situation in 2014, which was the last time the show was organised in Spain (Barcelona). The government has plans to build more than 4GW of onshore wind by 2020 and 2.5GW per year up to 2030. The government also has plans for floating offshore wind. The Spanish wind supply chain currently employs around 22,000 people, and many of these are in the Bilbao area in northern Spain, which makes this location a logical choice.

EU votes yes to long-term binding target for renewables
In November the European Parliament gave its final approval for a binding European Union (EU)-wide renewable energy target of 32% for 2030. The Parliament cast its final vote on adoption of the Renewable Energy Directive and the Governance Regulation, two key parts of Europe’s Clean Energy Package that sets the EU legal framework for renewables up to 2030. Ministers from the 28 member states will soon finalise their approval, and the Directive and Regulation will become law.
