Governor Phil Murphy has signed Executive Order No. 307, increasing New Jersey’s offshore wind goal by nearly 50 percent to 11,000MW by 2040. The Executive Order, which increases the state’s current goal of 7,500MW, also directs the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to study the feasibility of increasing the target further.

The world’s wind and solar projects combined to meet more than a tenth of global electricity demand for the first time in 2022, according to research company BloombergNEF (BNEF). At the same time overall electricity demand, production from coal-fired power plants, and emissions all surged in 2021 as the global economy regained its footing following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Dutch government has set a target of 70 GW of offshore wind by 2050 and aims to increase green hydrogen production in the country. This new target is based on the assumption that by 2040, 50GW of offshore wind has been installed and there is already 21GW by 2030.

As part of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) commitment to acquire and use the best available information and knowledge in its decision making, BOEM is improving its processes for identifying future offshore wind energy sites. The Bureau will apply these changes to ongoing planning efforts in the Gulf of Mexico, Central Atlantic and Gulf of Maine, and off the Oregon coast.
