Renewable energy targets demand a challenging increase in wind turbine capacity over the next 10–15 years, but current experience puts noise above visual effects as factors that delay, and may even stop, the progress of new installations. The first international conference on wind turbine noise will be held in Berlin on 17 and 18 October 2005. The full title ‘Wind Turbine Noise: Perspectives for Control’ sets the theme of the groundbreaking conference squarely in this main problem area. The conference will act as a forum in which information on noise can be shared between noise specialists, manufacturers, planners and developers, all of whom are invited to offer papers or attend as delegates. Organised by INCE/Europe, a Member of the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering (I-INCE) and a Sustaining Member of the European Acoustics Association (EAA), the conference will bring together the latest information on noise and vibration from wind turbines, to give an unbiased framework from within which future developments can be assessed. On 14 and 15 June 2005, the 4th Offshore Wind Energy Conference will take place concurrently with the 3rd www.Windmesse.de Symposium in Hamburg for the first time. From now on, the two events will be convened together. The expert conference on the design and operation of wind turbines offers the operators of wind farms, plant manufacturers, investors and representatives of insurance companies alike a valuable discussion platform on matters of topical interest in the wind energy sector. With the migration from land to sea, a large number of technical requirements are being posed with regard to the reliability of the installations. In particular, the laying of electrical cables and the complicated approval procedures are for now the decisive aspects in the development and realisation of offshore wind farms. The conference programme includes an examination of the pros and cons for various types of multi-megawatt plants. On the day after the event, the participants will have the possibility of visiting the giant RePower 5M turbine at Brunsbüttel. The event will be chaired jointly by Germanischer Lloyd WindEnergie GmbH and www.Windmesse.de in the ‘Hafen Hamburg’ Hotel. www.gl-group.com/glwind www.Windmesse.de/symposium/

There has been widespread approval for Eolica Expo Mediterranean 2005, the Italian event dedicated to wind energy that will be held in Rome from 29 September to 1 October 2005. Still seven months from its inauguration, this fourth conference and exhibition has already aroused great interest from important international firms within the sector that have already confirmed their presence. This year, as in previous years, there will be a rich programme which features a large number of meetings and conferences arranged in collaboration with ANEV (National Association for Wind Energy), APER (Association of the Producers of Renewable Energy), Legambiente, Kyoto Club Italy and ISES Italy. It is interesting to note that CO2 Expo 2005 will be held simultaneously to Eolica Expo Mediterranean 2005. CO2 Expo 2005 is the first fair/conference dedicated to the climate and to the greenhouse gas emission market, which started on 1 January 2005 in Europe, and involves over 1,000 manufacturing companies in Italy alone.
