In Belgium bats are protected by the law of protected species. Windfarm Perwez, consisting of five Vestas V90 turbines, is obligated to monitor for bats and shut down the turbines by pre-defined standstill algorithms from April 1st till October 31st.
During the high season the turbines must be stopped between sunset and sunrise at wind speeds less than 7 m/s, temperatures higher than 8 degrees and absence of rainfall. Topwind provides with the Bat Protection System the monitoring obligation and minimises standstill due to the pre-defined standstill algorithms and costs for monitoring and onsite research. The Bat Protection System ensures a safe habitat for bats and minimise the production losses.
