The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) has released its annual market statistics: the 2016 market was more than 54GW, bringing total global installed capacity to nearly 487GW. Led by China, the US, Germany, and India; and also with strong showings from France, Turkey and the Netherlands.

American wind power just achieved its second strongest quarter ever for newly installed energy generating capacity according to the Fourth Quarter 2016 U.S. Wind Industry Market Report released by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). Wind surpassed hydropower dams to become the largest source of renewable electric capacity in the U.S., and the fourth largest overall.

Wind accounted for 51% of all new power installations in 2016, connecting a total of 12.5GW to the grid across the 28 EU Member States – 10.923MW in onshore and 1,567MW offshore. Total wind capacity in Europe now stands at 153.7GW. Wind energy covered 10.4% of Europe’s electricity needs last year.

Aberdeen Science Centre (ASC) and Vattenfall, the company behind the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), have developed a series of public events and outreach activities themed around offshore wind and technology which will run from this month (January) until September 2018. It will be rolled out to schools and nurseries in the region.

Canada’s wind energy industry had another year of strong growth in 2016, adding 702MW of new capacity through the commissioning of 21 projects in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia.
