The Swedish government has presented plans to build offshore wind power farms that will generate 20–30 TWh per year initially. At a later stage, the government targets producing 120 TWh using offshore wind.
The new plan identifies three sea areas in the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic Sea, and the North Sea as the first locations for the expanded offshore capacity. The government anticipates moving further offshore and using floating wind turbines for future offshore wind farms. Sweden currently consumes about 140 TWh per year, and power consumption is expected to rise in the coming years due to the energy transition and electrification of industries and the transportation sector.
